Chargeable vehicles and electrical safety
As with all domestic appliances in general, it is important to pay attention to electrical safety when charging your electric vehicle, too.
It should be noted that, from the point of view of electrical safety at home, fires that have originated from electrical appliances could in most cases have been prevented with the right kind of operation and with the correct use of the appliances. Some of the causes of electrical fires are e.g. loose connections, overcharged appliances and systems, wrongly performed installations and if the electrical appliance has been used for a purpose other than that for which it was intended. Electric vehicles and charging are no exception. For the abovementioned reasons, it is very important to be well-informed about the charging of EVs, associated devices and instructions. Charging your EV at home will cause no safety hazards as long as the condition of the property's electricity network and its suitability for EV charging are checked beforehand. You can have this checked by booking a charging method survey for the property. The survey is an inspection carried out by a specialist on the permanent EV charging place. When the property's electrical network is sound and its resources suitable for charging, it is always recommended to have an official charging device ínstalled at the permanent EV charging place.
Professional skill requirements have been imposed by law on those performing electrical work. The building and repairing of all fixed electrical installations (electrical appliances) require so-called electrical contracting rights (the right to carry out electrical work). The requirements also concern repair work of electrical devices. The most important requirement of the electrical contracting rights is that the person carrying out the electrical work should have at their disposal a sufficiently highly qualified electrical works manager who is responsible for overseeing the work. There are also qualification requirements governing technicians working independently under an electrical contractor (See KTMp 516/1996 11§, Finnish and Swedish only).
