Installation of a domestic charging device at a detached house

PlugIt carries out high-quality installations of EV domestic chargers with professional skill.

EV charging with a permanently fixed charging device is safe, easy and fast. Before installation of the device, a charging method survey is carried out on the property, to clarify the suitability of the property's electricity network to vehicle charging.

After the charging method survey has been carried out, a domestic charging device can be installed that has been recommended by a professional in the field. The domestic EV charging device to be installed in a permanent place is always selected case by case, so that it is suitable for the property in question and for the customer's needs. The choice of charging device depends e.g. on the location of the device, its suitability to the existing electrical resources of the property, and the vehicle to be charged (single- or 3-phase charging).

PlugIt's professionals will advise in all matters concerning EV charging, e.g. in the selection of a suitable domestic charging device.

Inspection of the property's charging resources

Before installing a charging device it is necessary to have the electrical resources of the property checked by a professional electrician.

To ensure safe EV charging at home, PlugIt Finland has developed its charging method survey servce, which ensures that the car charging place fulfills the appropriate requirements and specifications. It is recommended that a maximum current of 8A is taken in charging a car from a regular domestic socket.

The other electric loads affect how much electricity can be used in charging a car.

The main fuses have an influence on car charging

The most common main fuse capacity in detached houses in Finland is 3 x 25A. However, the entire 25A current cannot be used solely for EV charging, as there are also other electric loads on the same main fuse. These other electric loads (e.g. heating, domestic appliances) affect how much electricity can be used in the charging of a car. In general a domestic EV charging device can output as much as 13-16A of current during the charging of a car.

The charging device is always positioned in the most practical place from the user’s point of view.

The right place for the charging device

When installing a charging device, we firstly select its placing together with the customer, taking into consideration the position of the charging socket on the car, and also the cabling.

The cable is drawn from the electricity supply centre to the charging device

Cabling from the electricity supply to the deviice

It takes several hours to install a domestic charging device, depending on the place. The charging device requires its own cabling direct from the main- or subsupply centre, which takes more time. In general the cable is drawn as a surface-mounted installation from the electricity supply centre to the charging device.

A domestic charging device forms its own circuit, which is safe because the other electric cables are thus not encumbered.

Connecting and programming the device

The device is connected and programmed to the correct current capacities that are available at the property. The current capacity input to the vehicle is also observed in the installation.

The temporary charging device that comes with the EV is intended only for temporary use as an EV charger. The heavy device caused great mechanical stress on the socket.

EV charging with a temporary charging device

Electric vehicles are generally equipped with a temporary charging device, which can be used to charge the car from a regular domestic electrical socket. As the name indicates, the device is only intended for temporary EV charging use, and even then a professional should be called in to make sure that the socket can be safely used for this purpose. Regular domestic sockets are designed for domestic appliances and small hand power tools, and not for the kind of usage required for continuous EV charging.

It is recommended that a maximum current of 8A should be taken from the domestic electrical socket for car charging. This is why charging with a temporary charging device is slower: fully charging a 100% electric vehicle can take up to 12 hours. Overloading a regular socket brings about overheating and fire risks. The weight of a temporary charging device also causes great mechanical strain on the socket.
